What is the difference between Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder?
Bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder are two distinct mental health conditions with unique characteristics and diagnostic criteria.
Bipolar disorder is primarily characterised by recurrent episodes of extreme mood swings, including periods of elevated mood known as mania and episodes of depression. These mood shifts are often accompanied by changes in energy levels, sleep patterns, and activity levels.
On the other hand, borderline personality disorder is characterised by pervasive patterns of instability in relationships, self-image, and emotions. Individuals with borderline personality disorder often experience intense fear of abandonment, exhibit impulsive and self-destructive behaviours, and have difficulties regulating their emotions.
While both disorders involve mood disturbances, the nature and pattern of these disturbances differ significantly between bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. It is crucial to consult with a mental health professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
