Ms Mary Cantrill

B.S.W (Hons), Master of Couple and Family therapy, PhD Social Work

Mary is a Couple Therapist with 15 years of experience in supporting couples to create better lives and healthier relationships. She provides relationship counselling for those who are experiencing conflict and stress in their relationships and who are seeking ways to build and strengthen their communication and emotional connectedness.
Mary holds an Honours degree in Social Work (UNSW) and a Masters degree in Couple and Family Therapy (UNSW), and is a PhD candidate for the School of Social Work (UNSW). She is a full member the Australian Association of Social Workers.

Her qualifications, clinical experience, and research inform her approach to help couples address the root cause of conflict. She works with her clients on their relationship goals which may include: improving their understanding of themselves and each other, communicating their needs and dealing with stress and conflict effectively, and rebuilding the foundations for stronger relationships. She works with her clients to help them share their experiences with each other safely and collaboratively for the common goal of resolution and healing.

Mary currently works as a social work educator and supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate students in higher education, and she is a family connections group facilitator for parents, partners, and adult siblings of people with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Mary’s passion extends to her research interests. She has completed a qualitative research study on the adolescent, parent, and therapist perceptions of family therapy treatment in a NSW outpatient child and adolescent mental health service. She has also submitted her PhD, a narrative inquiry that explores the family experience from the voices of parents of the first psychiatric hospitalisation. Her focus is on the parental dyad as they navigate the pathway to activate help for their loved ones, and how the impact on the family across three key nodal points: pre-admission, admission, and post discharge.

Mary offers appointments on a Friday afternoon and Saturday mornings.
